Hamaji

We had the pleasure of collaborating with Hamaji, a slow-fashion, artisanal brand born in Kenya by designer Louise Sommerlatte. It was founded with a deep commitment to preserving ancient textile traditions, empowering local artisans, and creating garments that carry the quiet poetry of handcrafted making. Their collections blend natural fibres, botanical dyes, handwork, and free-flowing silhouettes that reflect both heritage and effortless elegance.

For this collaboration, we began by developing an explorative range of sample swatches while working with a variety of natural dye materials to achieve a nuanced palette and textural play. This included shibori experimentation to create patterned surfaces.

We translated these swatches into fabric samples, providing a tactile library from which the brand could draw for their seasonal vision.

When the collection direction was finalised, we moved into natural dye production. Dyeing larger runs of fabrics in the rich colours and prints selected from the swatches. These textiles were then used in Hamaji’s garment construction.

Working with Hamaji was a wonderful experience. Their reverence for craft and curiosity about colour made the process feel like a shared exploration, and we were delighted to see how beautifully the textiles were transformed into garments that honour both story and material.
